In April 1961, at a time
when Tourism, the BVI’s leading industry, was essentially non-existent, RTW had
its humble beginnings in small rented premises in Road Town.
In 1963 RTW purchased its
first cargo vessel, the M.V. Kilros, through which it was able to extend its services
to the island of Virgin Gorda selling directly from this "floating store".
After years of steady growth,
the company built its first warehouse in 1970, on the site which is now the RTW
Cash and Carry. A merger in 1975 and subsequent land acquisition over the years
resulted in a Warehouse Complex and our flag ship store at Pasea Estate. Since 1977,
RTW has operated its own retail supermarket chain, called Riteway Foodmarkets, which
boasts five convenient locations on the island of Tortola. This service is enhanced
by two wholesale outlets, one in Pasea and one in Virgin Gorda, that provide an
excellent distribution network.
Where we are today …
We carry exclusive distribution rights for brands such as Kraft General Foods, M&M
Mars, Kellogg’s, Nabisco, Coca Cola, Guinness Stout, Heineken, Beefeater Gin, Courvoisier,
Grey Goose, Finladia, Jack Daniels, Mount Gay Rum and Gallo wines, all of which
help to make up the company’s impressive portfolio of brands.
Today, with a compliment
of about three hundred (300) employees RTW has maintained its leadership position
as the territory’s largest and most successful wholesaler and retailer of food,
beverages, cigarettes and related goods. Furthermore, it is generally considered
as one of the most progressive companies in the territory – a position the current
Management Team continues to strengthen by employing new and innovative strategies.
Development plans include
an 8 million dollar investment in a world class Cash and Carry and Riteway Food
Market in Pasea Estate.
